2012 Lunar Dragon 1oz Silver Proof High Relief Coin

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Official Pictures and Release Info Now Available: CLICK HERE.

Thanks to members on Silver Stackers I got the heads up that the Perth Mint is releasing a new Dragon coin in March 2012 (yes ANOTHER dragon *rolleyes*), but I have to admit it's the first one in while that has really captured my interest. It is listed as a "2012 Year of the Dragon 1oz Silver Proof High Relief Coin" on the Perth Mint's forthcoming releases page. Due to be released from 12.01am (Perth time) on March 2nd.

It will be interesting to see whether they stick with the standard series 1 Lunar coin design. I suspect it may be an entirely new design as the shape of the Silver High Relief Kangaroo series the Perth Mint started producing in 2010 has very different dimensions to the standard 1 ounce Lunar coins (I guess they could just shrink the size of the design).

The 1 ounce Series 2 Silver Lunar coins are 45.6mm in diameter and 2.6mm whereas the high relief Kangaroos are 32.6mm in diameter and 6mm thick. The coins extra thickness allows for a much deeper strike and if you've seen the Kangaroo coins in the flesh you would probably agree with me that they have a stunning finish. Here are pictures of the Kangaroo coins (although the depth of strike is not well represented in the flat images):

Fingers crossed the Perth Mint does as well with the High Relief Silver Dragon as they've done with the Kangaroos!

This might be an release worth camping late at night (release time is 2.30am locally) to try and secure.
