2012 Year of the Dragon 5oz Silver Proof Coin Release

I'd actually been told this coin was due for a July release, but it has surprised by coming a month earlier. The Perth Mint will be releasing the following coin tonight:

I have blogged about the coin on a couple of previous occasions, first mentioning that it was on the way back in early February 2012 and more recently in this post here.

As I suggested the coin is similar in design & presentation to the original 1oz proof coin, although the display case is a little different, here are some pictures (click on them to go to the Perth Mint page for the coin):

Perth Mint product information is as follows:
Adding to the highly successful Australian Lunar Series II – 2012 Year of the Dragon, The Perth Mint is excited to present a 5oz Silver Proof coin.

The birth dates for people ruled by the Chinese Lunar dragon include 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000 and 2012.

Those born under the influence of this sign are said to be confident, enterprising, independent, self-assured, brave and passionate.

Struck from 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.

No more than 5,000 of these coins will be released by The Perth Mint.
As I mentioned in the previous post on this coin, I think potential for the value of this coin to appreciate more than the standard bullion coins is slim, so personally won't be adding it to my collection. However if it interests then you will be able to purchase it from the Perth Mint website late tonight when they list it. The newly listed releases from Perth Mint can be monitored here and I will post direct product links once available tomorrow morning.

Unfortunately, Perth has (again) implemented a regional lockout for US buyers. This time the coins have been sold to New York Mint,, which is known for drastically overpricing products. For example, the US Mint released the 2012 silver proof set yesterday at $68 (this is a mint-to-demand product, so no chance of it running out), and New York Mint is selling the same set for $100.

The coins will not be available for US buyers until mid-July and most likely at inflated premiums.

That's unfortunate for US buyers of Perth Mint products Doomberg!

I would be interested in reposting your most recent blog at Bullion Baron if you would allow it? Can you share your email address with me via the contact page on this site please?

Hi Baron,

I've sent the message requested. If it doesn't get through, let me know as I have another idea we could use.

The prize is 300 euro in europe its a good prize 50 euro cheaper than on the perth site ?? Usa people can buy the coin for 300 euro on german ebay with transport to us maybe 325 euro
so why dont try that if the us mint makes problems with waiting time and premiums.... so far the flipping prices are low saluti

thanks for that bit of info boomberg, just talked to a guy at new york mint, and he tryed to over charge me for a ms70 coin, thanks
