2013 Lunar Proof Coins: Year of the Snake - Sept 4th

The following coins are listed for release on September 4th by Perth Mint (see Perth Mint's Forthcoming Releases page):

Australian Lunar Series II - 2013 Year of the Snake Gold Proof Coins
Australian Lunar Series II - 2013 Year of the Snake Silver Proof Coins
Birds of Australia Series - Red-Tailed Black-Cockatoo 2013 1/2oz Silver Proof Coin
Australian Koala 2012 1oz Silver Proof High Relief Coin
Young Collectors – 2012 Animal Athletes Rhinoceros Beetle $1 Coin

NEW COIN RELEASES AVAILABLE FROM 12.01AM 4 SEPTEMBER 2012 (AWST)

Those who have been following Lunar coin news on Silver Lunar or elsewhere would likely be aware that the bullion Lunar releases are available from the day before, as I posted about on the blog here:

The 2012 Dragon release the proof coins were released almost a week after the bullion coins. Having the Proof Coins released the day after the Bullion Coins is convenient for me as I will still be in Perth from the Lunar launch event and should hopefully be able to pick up the proof coins I'm after directly from the Perth Mint.

For those not familiar with the standard proof coins and sets, this is what we can expect to see released by Perth Mint on September 4th:

Australian Lunar Series II - 2013 Year of the Snake Silver Proof Coins
2013 Snake Silver Proof 1oz Coin
2013 Snake Silver Proof Three-Coin Set
2013 Snake Silver Proof 1kg Coin

Australian Lunar Series II - 2013 Year of the Snake Gold Proof Coins
2013 Snake Gold Proof 1/10oz Coin
2013 Snake Gold Proof 1/4oz Coin
2013 Snake Gold Proof 1oz Coin
2013 Snake Gold Proof Three-Coin Set

If last years Lunar Dragon release is to be of any guide on what which will be the most popular you will want to stick with the Silver 1oz Proof Coin and the Silver 3 Coin Proof Set. Shortly after their release the 3 Coin Proof Dragon Set was selling for around $800-1000 (over double the release price) and the 1oz Proof Dragon by itself trebled, selling for $300-400.

Peak prices from my observation were obtained only a short time after their release (although this might also be a result of a falling/low spot price for Silver since that time), so if you are looking to flip any coins, selling shortly after they sell out from official outlets might be a method to achieve the best price.

Pictures of the Proof designs which were previously posted and then removed from the blog can be seen below (now they are out of embargo):

Hi BB,
Do you happen to remember how much the 2012 bullion dragons initially sold for either in Australia or in other markets?
I know they rapidly increased once the coins sold out at Perth,
but my recollection is they were available for about the same
amount as the 2013 snakes are being sold for now. I expect the snakes to sell out at Perth very quickly, and prices should double or better over time.
Thanks, Louis

Perth Mint sold their direct allocation for around the $48 mark, if I recall correctly spot price of Silver was around $38-40.

Australian dealers were selling their Dragons anywhere from $40 (during preorders when spot was lower) to $60 and more on release.

US Dealers such as APMEX were priced around $100 per coin. Many European dealers asking around the equivalent (60-80 Euro).

Cheers
BB
