2013 Lunar Snake (Gold and Silver): Macau Series

Apologies to any readers who missed out on seeing the pictures of the Perth Mint 2013 Lunar Snake Coins. I was asked to remove the images given that they are embargoed until release on September 3rd.

But on to a mint who has publicly revealed the designs of their forthcoming coins 2013 Lunar Snake designs... Singapore Mint has recently posted pictures and details of the soon to be issued Macau Lunar Snake Coins (hat tip to members of the Gold Club Asia Forums for spotting this one)!

Here is their description of the design:
In conjunction with the 2013 Lunar Snake year, the Monetary Authority of Macau issues the Macau Snake coin which is the sixth in the Macau Lunar coin collection (2008- 2019), exclusively minted and marketed by The Singapore Mint.

An elegantly placed snake over a vibrant display of golden cymbidium ensifolium orchids is featured on the obverse side of the coin. The reverse side of the coin features the Ruins of St. Paul’s, located in the Historic Centre of Macau, proudly listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
See below for the separate details and photos of the coins:

It appears the popular 5oz Silver coin is already sold out and will go to a ballot process in order to fill orders (with only 500 coins minted).

The 1oz Silver and 1/4oz Gold coins can still be ordered from the Singapore Mint website, but delivery is not until September.

Thanks goes to reader 'LAB' who has provided some photos of previous issues so you can see how amazing these coins look in real life in comparison to the computer rendered versions shown above:

Perth Mint 2013 Lunar Snake Coin Pictures Leaked

It appears that we have a case of 'ask and you shall receive'.

Earlier today I posted about the forthcoming release of the Perth Mint 2013 Lunar Snake Coins:
Some might remember that the design for the Perth Mint 2012 Lunar Dragon was in fact leaked a couple of months before the release date and official unveiling, so keep your eyes peeled.
Although the description for the 2013 Silver Lunar Snake reads like it could be a repeat of the 2001 Gold Lunar Snake (snake entwined on a branch, see picture below), I have it on good authority that they've gone with a completely new design for the silver coin this year.
A short time ago an anonymous poster linked some pictures of the forthcoming coin at the bottom of the article... couldn't have asked for more than that!

The images show what appears to be the proof versions of the coin (shiny background, matte design), but the same images will be replicated for the bullion design (Series 2 has kept the image used between proof and bullion coins consistent where some in Series 1 differed between the two types).

[At request of Perth Mint the images were removed until official release, but are now out of their embargo period]

I really like the new designs. They have a modern artistic look with some Chinese influence.

The snakes in Series 1 were perhaps a more realistic representation of the reptile, but I am not a fan of the 2001 Silver Lunar design (snake with eggs).

Just a reminder that Perth Mint won't be releasing the bullion coin until September 3rd this year, so it will be sometime before you are able to purchase them. However, at least the images above will give you advance time to think about whether you want to purchase some. I have no doubt that I will end up buying a roll or three.

When released the Perth Mint 2013 Lunar Snake coins are likely to be highly sought after for the reasons I outlined in June last year (for the Lunar Dragon release), they:

- Have a low mintage
- Sport an aesthetically pleasing design
- Are housed in individual capsules
- Have a quality finish
- Are produced by world renowned Perth Mint
- Come with legal tender status
- Priced as bullion coins on release

I don't know that they will be quite as popular as the Dragons, but I won't rule anything out as I believe the number of retail investors looking to buy popular, well recognised series and brands over more readily available low premium Silver bars will increase as the bull market in Silver progresses to the public interest phase.

Cheers

2013 Lunar Snake Launch: September 3rd Release

The 2013 Year of the Snake Lunar coins from Perth Mint in Western Australia are set to be released on Monday, 3rd September 2012.
You can see my previous coverage of the coin release in this post:

Perth Mint 2013 Year of the Snake Lunar Coins

Although the official designs have not yet been released, we can get some design cues from the ComLaw submissions as previously posted about earlier this year:

The design for the 2013 Australian Lunar Year of the Snake (10kg, 1kg, 10oz, 5oz, 2oz, 1oz and 1/2oz) silver bullion coins consists of a representation of a snake entwined on a branch, surrounded by a pattern of lines.

The design for the 2013 Australian Lunar Year of the Snake (10kg, 1kg, 10oz, 2oz, 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, 1/10oz and 1/20oz) gold bullion coins consists of a representation of a snake resting on grass with bamboo at its side, surrounded by a pattern of lines.

The Perth Mint has already started talking about the coming release, with this recent post on their blog:
Indicative interest is pointing to extremely high demand for 1oz releases from the 2013 Australian Lunar bullion coin program.
The next release, which will become available in early September, features designs celebrating the Year of the Snake - often referred to in China as the ‘Little Dragon’!
Our sales predictions are based on expressions of interest received from our international wholesale partners. They’re running at levels comparable to the record-breaking Dragon series this time last year.
As you know, the full Dragon mintages of 30,000 1oz gold and 300,000 1oz silver coins sold out at the Mint in record time, and these mintage restrictions remain unchanged for 2013. Perth Mint Blog
Typical that they are already trying to tie this release in with that of the Dragon, which has easily been their most popular (and hyped) Lunar release so far!

It's going to be very interesting to see just how well the 2013 Lunar Snake sells given the level of interest and immediate sell out we saw with the Silver Lunar bullion coin last year.

I will be heading to Perth for the release of the Perth Mint 2013 Lunar Snake Coins (good opportunity to visit the Perth Mint for the first time), so you can be sure there will be some timely coverage of the release on Silver Lunar and also likely on Twitter (you can follow me here: @BullionBaron)

** Apologies to regular readers for the lack of posts on Silver Lunar of late, but time available for blogging has been lacking recently and any time I've had available has been spent posting at my primary site: Bullion Baron.
