Two different 2013 Year of the Snake Gold Coins will be released. The pictured coin is the 1/10oz gold coin (specimen finish) which will have a maximum mintage of 18,888 coins (CAD$229.95) and a proof version featuring the same design will also available. The proof will be struck in 18 karat gold (75% gold / 25% silver) weighing 11.84g and will have a maximum mintage of 2,500 coins (CAD$688.88).

Orders will open to the general public from the 28th of August, with orders already currently open for Master's Club Members. The Royal Canadian Mint website: http://www.mint.ca/

The Royal Canadian Mint produced a series of Lunar coins over 1998 to 2008. The series was designed by Harvey Chan. They were made from Sterling Silver and each weighed 34g, thus contained over an ounce of pure silver (ASW). The central lunar figure cameo is plated with 0.2 grammes of 24k gold. The below is the 2001 Lunar release from the Royal Canadian Mint:

My personal preference of all the above Lunar Snake coins from the Royal Canadian Mint is the new 2013 Lotus design, what a stunning coin! Will be great to see some photos of these in real life.

2013 Lunar Proof Coins: Year of the Snake - Sept 4th

The following coins are listed for release on September 4th by Perth Mint (see Perth Mint's Forthcoming Releases page):

Australian Lunar Series II - 2013 Year of the Snake Gold Proof Coins
Australian Lunar Series II - 2013 Year of the Snake Silver Proof Coins
Birds of Australia Series - Red-Tailed Black-Cockatoo 2013 1/2oz Silver Proof Coin
Australian Koala 2012 1oz Silver Proof High Relief Coin
Young Collectors – 2012 Animal Athletes Rhinoceros Beetle $1 Coin

NEW COIN RELEASES AVAILABLE FROM 12.01AM 4 SEPTEMBER 2012 (AWST)

Those who have been following Lunar coin news on Silver Lunar or elsewhere would likely be aware that the bullion Lunar releases are available from the day before, as I posted about on the blog here:

The 2012 Dragon release the proof coins were released almost a week after the bullion coins. Having the Proof Coins released the day after the Bullion Coins is convenient for me as I will still be in Perth from the Lunar launch event and should hopefully be able to pick up the proof coins I'm after directly from the Perth Mint.

For those not familiar with the standard proof coins and sets, this is what we can expect to see released by Perth Mint on September 4th:

Australian Lunar Series II - 2013 Year of the Snake Silver Proof Coins
2013 Snake Silver Proof 1oz Coin
2013 Snake Silver Proof Three-Coin Set
2013 Snake Silver Proof 1kg Coin

Australian Lunar Series II - 2013 Year of the Snake Gold Proof Coins
2013 Snake Gold Proof 1/10oz Coin
2013 Snake Gold Proof 1/4oz Coin
2013 Snake Gold Proof 1oz Coin
2013 Snake Gold Proof Three-Coin Set

If last years Lunar Dragon release is to be of any guide on what which will be the most popular you will want to stick with the Silver 1oz Proof Coin and the Silver 3 Coin Proof Set. Shortly after their release the 3 Coin Proof Dragon Set was selling for around $800-1000 (over double the release price) and the 1oz Proof Dragon by itself trebled, selling for $300-400.

Peak prices from my observation were obtained only a short time after their release (although this might also be a result of a falling/low spot price for Silver since that time), so if you are looking to flip any coins, selling shortly after they sell out from official outlets might be a method to achieve the best price.

Pictures of the Proof designs which were previously posted and then removed from the blog can be seen below (now they are out of embargo):

Perth Mint 2013 Lunar Snake Coin Distribution

Perth Mint 2013 Lunar Snake Design
Ron Currie from Perth Mint put up the following notice on the blog last Friday:
Because of the expected popularity of the 2013 Australian Lunar – Year of the Snake 1oz gold and silver bullion coins, these releases will be allocated to official Perth Mint distributors based on their previous sales of Lunar coins.

Our dealer allocations have not yet been finalised, so it is worrying that rumours have reached us that some secondary dealers (not direct Perth Mint clients) are prepared to take “pre-orders” for these products, which are scheduled for release in September.

This situation arose prior to the launch of our Year of the Dragon coins and resulted in some extremely disappointed retail customers.

Please be extremely wary of any offer to “pre-order” 1oz bullion Snakes which are still in the process of being allocated to authorised Perth Mint dealers. Blog
A couple of things to note...

You will notice that allocations for the Lunar release to distributors will be based on previous sales, so we can expect like last year that a majority of the coins will be shipped overseas (not sold in Australia). This likely means we will see another very quick local sellout and you will need to secure your coins immediately after release if you want a piece of the action for a reasonable price.

Also the blog post issues a warning for buyers who have placed any "pre-orders" for the 2013 Lunar Snakes... as the allocations have not yet been confirmed you would best to be wary of any dealers offering pre-orders given that there is no guarantee they will be able to fill every order. Many buyers who went through dealer pre-orders last year for the Perth Mint 2012 bullion Dragon coins found their order size reduced (I was a customer affected by this), so tread carefully...

If interested in a run down on last years Dragon mania where bullion prices were bid up to some ridiculous levels ($165+ for a single 1oz bullion coin) checkout some of the older articles linked in this post on Bullion Baron: LINK.

Get ready for a similar rush this time around. Get an account registered with Perth Mint well in advance of release day (you will need an account on the Perth Mint Bullion website located here). Get in early and be careful not to pay too much... there were some serious bubble prices being paid within days of the sell out for the Dragon and many of these buyers ended up badly burned. Although the low mintage 1oz bullion Gold and Silver Lunar coins are worth buying, it is only worth paying bullion prices for them. Don't get caught up in the hype.

Good luck!
